Feeding the hundreds

Feeding the hundreds -- not yet the five thousand

Under the heading 'Helping local foodbanks and homelessness', are details of the four ecumenical food banks which our churches support.

Making and serving breakfasts at Whitechapel Mission also has its own heading.

The need to help families during school holidays has recently been recognised. 'Free school dinners' are important to families on or below the breadline. In Raunds, an attempt to meet this need was made in 2016 using the Raunds Methodist premises, but the experiment was not repeated. However, during the summer holiday in 2018, our Raunds church, working with Spurgeons, has arranged a holiday club on Thursday morning for children under 11s (with a carer). Activities and games, of course, but the session includes a free lunch.

For older people,('older' is a variable non-specific term), a shared meal brings company and conversation as well as food. And it is always a treat when a meal is prepared for you! The list is:

Irthlingborough serves light lunches on the third Wednesday of the months Feb to March at 12.00. Attendance 25+. Followed by WOW, Worship on Wednesday.

Wollaston serves full lunches on alternate Thursdays to about 30 – 40 people from the village and beyond. It is a Methodist venture and on occasions numbers top 50. Light lunches are also provided whenever we have a ‘coffee morning’ and also on 5 Sundays during the year there is a special lunch for mainly members and adherents. (Again about 30)

At Hope lunches are served every Friday at 12.30pm to an average of 45 people. No need to book.

Earls Barton cooks 'Good Plate' lunches on the last Saturday of the month using supermarket surplus. Up to 85 people enjoy this get-together over a meal. A meal for youngsters and families, also using supermarket surplus, is called 'Little Plate', and is held in school holidays but is dependent on pulling in enough volunteers.

Raunds has Sunday lunches monthly. These are popular meals - in fact pre-booking is essential for the December (Christmas) lunch.

In addition there are special fetes, Strawberry Fairs, and coffee mornings, etc.
